Atlanta sees a soccer solution
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

A group of executives for Atlanta-based companies are embracing soccer to improve Atlanta's image as a global city. A "soccer cabinet," led by Aaron's CEO Robin Loudermilk, is studying ways that soccer can help the city grow economically and socially. Their motto: "Soccer is good for Atlanta, and Atlanta is good for soccer."

Amendments to the Laws of the Game and Decisions of the Board
Posted: 7/15/10

1. Law 14 – The Penalty Kick
Interpretation of the Laws of the Game and Guidelines for Referees
Procedure
Present Text
Feinting to take a penalty kick to confuse opponents is permitted as part of football. However, if, in the
opinion of the referee, the feinting is considered an act of unsporting behavior, the player must be cautioned.
New Text
Feinting in the run-up to take a penalty kick to confuse opponents is permitted as part of football.
However, feinting to kick the ball once the player has completed his run-up is considered an
infringement of Law 14 and an act of unsporting behavior for which the player must be cautioned.
Reason
In view of an increasing trend in players feinting to take a penalty kick to deceive the goalkeeper, it is
necessary to clarify what is permitted and what action a referee must take in the event of an infringement
USSF Advice to Referees: Players may feint during the run to the ball (so long as this does not involve, in
the opinion of the referee, excessive changes in direction or similar delays in the taking of the kick) but
feinting actions once the run to the ball is complete are now to be considered a violation of Law 14 by the
kicker. This would include clearly stopping and waiting for a reaction by the goalkeeper before taking the
kick or any similar clear hesitation after the run to the ball is complete and before kicking the ball into
play. In other words, once the kicker has reached the ball, the kick must be taken without hesitation or
delay. In most cases, the referee should allow the kick to proceed and then decide on the appropriate action
to take based on the outcome of the kick: if the ball went into the net, the goal is canceled and the kick
retaken; if the ball did not go into the net, an indirect free kick is given to the opposing team where the

violation occurred. In either case, before play is restarted, the kicker must be cautioned for unsporting
behavior.

High school team taunted with 'green cards'
Action 3 News

After their team won the Nebraska State Boys Soccer Championship, Lincoln East High School students rushed the field and some tossed home-made "green cards" into the air. The cards floated down around the Omaha South High players, many of whom are of Hispanic heritage.

"It's one of the best feelings just making it to that game," said Billy Loera, an Omaha South senior. "Having it end like that was just disgraceful." Omaha South Junior Alex Stillinger said, "To me, these guys are my brothers. So it hurt me being the only non- Latino on the team."

Lincoln East has suspended some of the students involved. And Lincoln East staff and students are writing apology letters to their counterparts at Omaha South High School. "It's kind of a shame that they just won the biggest game of their lives and instead of celebrating, that is what comes to their minds," Loera.

A Reminder From American Academy of Pediatrics
Posted: 5/19/10

The American Academy of Pediatrics reminds parents that playing is supposed to be fun. Getting caught up in having a child make it to a professional level or the Olympics is unrealistic for most students, they say. Less than 1% of high school athletes turn pro.

Here are the academy's recommendations for young athletes:

1)Limit training in one sport to no more than five days a week with at least one day off from any organized physical activity
2)Take two to three months off each year to give their bodies time to heal and to work on strength training and conditioning to reduce the risk of future injuries.
3)Multi-sport athletes who use the same body parts for different sports especially need to take a break between seasons to avoid overuse injuries.
4)Weekly training time, number of repetitions, or total distance should not increase by more than 10 percent weekly
5)Focus of sports should be on fun, skill acquisition, safety and sportsmanship.
6)Join only one team per season

Members of the Coliseum re-cap meeting 05-04-10,
Posted: 5/7/10

We voted to keep same members in office. Jody President, Jim Bono V. President, Todd Rayne Secretary, Bob Lusiak Treasure. We also have the same Trustee’s Agostino Aiello, Barry Depot, and John Fornino. I decided to hold off on G.M. Position. We also created a new position as Coaching Director, responsible to work with coaching on training and skills and proper accreditation on Risk management. I am still interviewing candidates for this position.

Bob Lusiak, gave the members an up dated report on finances for past year as well opened the books for review. We had a record year on Dinner Dance receipts on raffle tickets, Ad or Dinner Dance book, and broke out even on Dance. Plus we had entertainment and an overall successful 32 th. Dinner Dance. Jody thanked members, coaches and teams for selling tickets for raffle. It contributed to our bottom line success. Making it possible for tournaments and expenses for our soccer club.

Jody thanked members for helping out to get Proctor park field ready for games. A lot of time and energy went in getting fields ready. Jody authorized with body’s support to help offset some additional sod expense for Proctor Field. Mr Bruce Broat of AYSO was mentioned for his assistance and support. We wished all teams’ success on spring soccer.

The date for next year’s dinner dance is set for March 19, 2011. Please mark your calendars. Jody will confirm entertainment as this past year.

It was brought up about land in Schuyler the possibility to look into fair market price to consider selling it off. Jody has contacted a Lawyer Mr. Frank Madia and Frank Donato, & Donato appraisers to get fair market price. Much discussion on land and possibilities by members like club house or maybe a facility to offer practice for indoor practice teams was discussed. The ideas were taken into consideration and Jody will proceed to get fair market price and we will bring up again in September meeting. Before any decisions are made it must be voted on by the body of members.

Uniform update Irv brought in a couple of bills for processing. Jody thanked Irv for doing a fine job in this area.

The Constitution of the Coliseum Soccer club was reviewed and accepted with new minor changes. Jody will be forwarding revised copies to all active members and for new members. Jody also brought up about code of conduct for all players of Coliseum and responsible for coaches to be sure players sign and are aware of policy.

A new policy is being created for any active Coliseum member in good standing who might want to consider taking coaching courses. It must be brought to the boards attention, the member must pay up front for class, successfully pass with certificate. And agree and sigh a paper to continue being active in coaching for two years with Coliseum, the cost of the coaching course will be paid for by Coliseum once competition of course.

Bob L. reminded members during the summer recess to e-mail Bob Lusiak or Jody on tournament or issues that come up during the summer that answers are needed.

We wish all a healthy summer to members and families. Next Coliseum meeting in Sept.

Thank you,

Jody T.Grippe

President of Coliseum

Ref yellow cards heart attack victim

Eurosport

A referee in a Crotian fifth division game yellow-carded Mladost FC's 32-year-old defender Goran Tunjic for diving only to discover that he had suffered a heart attack. The referee quickly realized what happened and called for medical aid, but Tunjic died despite being rushed to a nearby hospital.

"Doctors tried to help him but there was nothing they could do," a club spokesman said.
